BSLA Projects Supported by Membership Dues

Projects Completed in 2007

  • The DNR boat landing on Hwy B was improved.   A second cement slab was installed to prevent long trailers, like pontoon trailers, from falling off the edge and making it difficult to launch and take boats out.   The extension was also helpful with the low water level all summer.
  • The BSLA has an information sign at the Hwy B landing that provides boating information, specific lake information, area activities, and BSLA information to lake users.
  • On March 15th, 17 fish cribs were built on Butternut Lake and were placed by the DNR in their final locations after ice-out.  This was the first year of a long-term crib plan to improve the Butternut Lake Fishery.  Butch Johnson and Flambeau Rivers Paper donated the logs for the cribs. Thank you for your generosity and support.  The BSLA is very grateful to all the volunteers that contributed time and materials to make this program a success.

2008 and Continuing Projects

  • Cribs — The BSLA has a plan to build at least 16 cribs annually for Butternut Lake. The cribs will be placed by the DNR according to a plan prepared by the DNR and approved by the BSLA board.   Cribs are built to meet DNR standards.  This has really become a community project with more volunteer help and material donations each year.   Plan on coming and helping build Cribs this March!  The BSLA Board encourages Schnur Lake residents to consider cribs as well. The BSLA would be more than willing to build cribs on Schnur Lake if access is available. Contact a board member for more information.
  • Sponsor a Crib Program — The BSLA approved a “Sponsor a Crib Program“.  The cost of a single crib is $80.   BSLA membership dues are getting stretched pretty thin and donations would be welcomed.   Crib Program donations can be made by contacting any BSLA board member, partial donations are also very welcome.
  • Tree Drop Program — Tree drops are an excellent and proven way to improve fish habitat.   Several “drops” have been made on both Schnur and Butternut Lakes. The BSLA has purchased anchors for residents to use to anchor the tress at no cost.   Contact any BSLA board member to obtain anchors and assistance.
  • Landing Improvements — The BSLA board is looking into using solar lights at the Hwy B DNR landing to make launching or taking your boat out at night much easier.   The goal is to install lights in 2008 or early Spring of 2009.
  • DNR Butternut Lake Fishery Plan — The BSLA Board is going to recommend to the DNR that they follow through with their fishery plan to reduce the daily bag limits on panfish, and to have a slot size for muskys.   This was a part of the overall plan that started with the removal of muskys in spring 2007.
  • Invasive Species & VHS — Board Member volunteers cut purple leaf strife found at the north end of Butternut Lake last summer.

Invasive species information is posted on the BSLA sign at the boat landing and is also available at the DNR office in Park Falls.

Residents are reminded to follow DNR boating rules to avoid bringing invasive species into our lakes.

Last summer Craig Roesler, Water Quality Biologist for the Wisconsin DNR, removed a non-native water lily that someone had planted in Butternut Lake.  Mr. Roesler warned that “such activities are illegal and can potentially introduce exotic invasive species. In the case of a non-native water lily, there is a potential threat from the water lily itself, as well as any plant diseases or insects it may carry, and any other seeds or tubers of other plant species that may be present in the rootball”.   This warning includes all non-native plants of any kind.
